O'Neil was in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to the 100th round. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents similar to Melissa. O'Neil was always delivering top performances since then, never fell below the top three. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
